Insider Secrets to Getting Hired

By Liz Wolgemuth

While searching for work alongside 16 million people who are angling for the same openings, getting a hiring manager to tell you why you didn't get hired is about as easy as actually getting the job. But one of the best things you can do is examine your job search with a critical eye: Is your resume really a good advertisement for your skills? Does your nail-gnawing habit turn off prospective employers? Do you tend to make your interviewers a little nervous?

Some of the most important elements of a successful job search are details. Here are nine tips to follow and details to consider, offered by the experts: hiring managers, executives, human resources managers, and career coaches:

White Lies on Resumes Raise Red Flags for Employers

by Lisa Scherzer
IT WASN'T ALL THAT long ago that the hiring process began and ended with a job interview. That's no longer the case. Hiring in the 21st century now can involve reference checks, credit histories, education and professional background verifications, psychometric testing, medical and fitness evaluations, police records reviews, drug and alcohol screens, and immigration and terrorism clearances.

Here's a clue as to why: Although just 5% of workers admit to fibbing on their resumes, 57% of hiring managers say they've caught a lie on a candidate's application, according to a 2006 survey by CareerBuilder.com.

How To Write A Job Description

by Judith Lindenberger

Think of a job description as a “snapshot” of a job. The job description needs to communicate clearly and concisely what responsibilities and tasks the job entails and to indicate, as well, the key qualifications of the job – the basic requirements (specific credentials or skills) – and, if possible, the attributes that underlie superior performance.

How to Update Your Job Skills While Unemployed

By DAWN FALLIK

Out of work for months? Prevent your professional skills from atrophying by taking steps to brush up.

In July, five million people in the U.S. were considered long-term unemployed—meaning they had been jobless
for 27 weeks or more. Career counselors say that as weeks turn into months, job-hunters need to polish and
update their skills to stay current. They should look for ways to network while they do so, and avoid spending lots
of money. "You want to get the biggest bang for your buck," says J.T. O'Donnell, a career coach in North
Hampton, N.H.

Here are some strategies:
