More Job Seeker’s Resolutions

The year 2020 is over — finally! No matter where you are in your career, the past year’s events probably threw at least a small wrench into the spanner. But 2021 is a new year, and it will hold a few surprises of its own that will benefit your career.

In this year’s guide to job seeker’s resolutions, we’re talking about resolutions you can make to recover and reenergize for the year ahead.

Think About Transferable Skills

The chaos of 2020 caused many people to rethink their current career and their future potential. Unfortunately, there will be jobs that won’t come back, and sectors impacted beyond 2021.

Now is the time to think about your transferable skills. What do you possess that would launch you into a new career? Communication, analytical skills, and leadership are excellent skills that can serve as a springboard for a new role or even a new industry. Does your current position require you to be tech literate? That’s another excellent opportunity to increase your skills.

Don’t be afraid to get creative. While some jobs will change forever, new opportunities will pop up to replace them.

Upskill with Digital Skills

If there’s one thing that will continue to dominate long after life returns to normal, it will be digital skills. There are very few positions today that don’t require digital literacy. Whether you run safety software on a construction site or participate in virtual meetings, tech is everywhere.

Those who consider themselves skeptical of technology or who work in industries where the digital transition is slower should use the new year to get up-to-date with the possibilities available to you at work.

If you can present solutions that you’re already familiar with, you’ll stand out when it comes time to switch jobs or go after a promotion.

Complement Your Resume with Portfolios

Hiring will likely continue to take place digitally, which means resumes need to do more heavy lifting. In addition to submitting resumes and cover letters, consider putting together a portfolio of your best work.

Portfolios aren’t just for creatives. You can use them in any industry to showcase your accomplishments. Think of them as case studies for career-defining moments. These will put your resume in context and help you stand out from the crowd.

2021 Will Bring New Opportunities

The year 2020 made you question why you made resolutions at all. However, as the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, new opportunities will emerge. By making these new years resolutions, you will put yourself in place to take advantage of the changes and find yourself a stronger person.
