When a temporary employee walks into work for the first time, they’re keenly aware that their job has an expiration date. While using contract and temporary employees is a great way to shore up your staffing needs, you shouldn’t necessarily treat them like temps.

To help your temporary employees make the most of their time with you, you should go out of your way to make them feel welcome. Here are a few ways you can do just that.

Introduce Them to the Team

In most cases, your temps are in to do one job or fill a specific role. But that doesn’t mean they’re not part of the team. Their work contributes to the team’s goals, so why not introduce them?

Make sure you introduce your new batch of employees to their coworkers rather than waiting for the introductions to happen organically. A quick introduction goes a long way in making their first day and week a pleasant and productive one. By doing so, you’ll help them feel welcome and give them points of reference for any questions they will have.

Give Them a Small Welcome Gift

Temporary and contract employees save you money over the long-run. So, why not thank them for their work with a welcome gift?

Something as simple as a free lunch or a branded travel mug will let them know that you appreciate them right off the bat. It also says a lot about your company culture, which could help you attract top talent even for temporary positions.

Invite Them to Social Events and Team Building

Do you host a company picnic? Social evening? Team building event? Always include your temporary staff, even if their contracts are about to end.

In fact, if you bring on a large group of temporary or seasonal workers, why not host a social event to welcome them for the year?

These social events exist to build cohesive teams, but like we said: your temporary and contract staff are part of your team, too!

Temporary employees are an important part of your business. They help you scale quickly, accomplish goals, and get the skills you need when you need them. But just because they won’t be around forever doesn’t mean you should forget to give them a proper welcome.
